A Year of Athletic Excellence

Baseball
Varsity Baseball capped the spring season with a remarkable come-from-behind win over Ruidoso 6-5 to win their eighth State Championship and the school’s 58th overall championship! Led byLucas Lemons ’23, Chris Andrick ’23, and Sam Treme ’23, the team won in dramatic fashion after trailing 5-0 until the bottom of the seventh inning. The team scored all five runs to tie the score with two outs. In the bottom of the ninth inning, eighth-grader Logan Lemons ’27 hit a double to score Chris Andrick from third base to win the game.Those outstanding efforts led to numerous players being named to the All District Team: Logan Lemons ’27, Landon Hardcastle ’26, Chris Gist ’25, Sam Treme ’23, Lucas Lemons ’23, and Chris Andrick ’23. Lucas Lemons ’23 was named Player of the Year. Varsity Baseball Coach Scott Brandt was named Coach of the Year.

Basketball
Both Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams finished as District Champions. Girls reached the Quarterfinals for State, and Boys advanced to the Semi-Finals.

Bowling
Prep’s Bowling team finished as Runners-Up in the State Tournament. Three bowlers -- Dylann Dooley '24, Adam Friedman '23, and Josiah Lieb '26 -- also received individual medals.

Cross Country
Cross Country athlete Kate Henderson '25 finished as the District 5-3A Champion. She and three other runners competed in the state Cross Country meet: Miles Manzanares '25, Aiden Vujevic '23, and Cate Broderick '25.

Dance
Sandia Prep’s Varsity Diablas Dance Team competed in several sanctioned competitions and placed first in Pom at the Spirit of Hope competition, second in Pom at the Los Lunas Heart of Gold Competition, and second in Pom at the Spirit Xpress West Competition. Some varsity dancers also competed solo and won or placed in their divisions. They performed the full-length production of The Nutcracker Ballet, which included almost 80 cast members, and also performed in the upper school production of Mamma Mia!. At the end of their season, the Varsity Diablas competed in a pom and jazz routine in the state competition and were State Runners Up.

eSports
Prep’s eSports Splatoon team finished the season 14-0 and won the 3A State Championship. Congrats to coaches Liam Arsenault and Mikaela Sanchez for their great work with our students. Team members were: Tyler Secor ’23, Caden Hallenbeck ‘23, Katie Gutierrez ’24, Sterling Cook ’25, and Cyrus Walker ’25. 

Golf
In Golf, players Tommy Chalamidas '25 and Mekade Jones '24 participated in the District Tournament. Tommy earned second place, and Mekade earned seventh place. 

Mountain Biking
Sandia Prep’s Mountain Bike Team continued to grow, with about a dozen committed, dedicated riders and another few who pop in and out. This fall will be the first full season of the New Mexico Interscholastic Cycling League, which is part of NICA. It will be the first time that middle and high school teams from across the state will compete exclusively with one another. Sandia Prep rising freshman Jane English ’27 landed a pro development team sponsorship. When she’s not racing for Prep, English rides for the Liv Southwest Pro Development Team.

Soccer
The Girls Varsity Soccer Team finished 8-0 this year in district and beat Bosque at their place to win their 11th State Championship. The Boys Varsity Soccer Team won their 21st State Championship. The Middle School Boys team finished undefeated and won the Albuquerque Parochial Independent Athletic League (APIAL) Championship. Recent grad Finnegan Saunders ’23 was named the 2022-23 Gatorade New Mexico Boys Soccer Player of the Year and was a United Soccer Coaches All-American selection. Alex Jeffries ’23 was also named to the 2023 Academic All-American Team.

Softball
Prep's softball team had a rebuilding year with five players who had never played before. They won some games and experienced great improvement. Nine out of 10 girls will return next year, the most in recent years. The future for Sundevil softball looks bright!

Swim & Dive
In Varsity Swim & Dive, recent grad Raleigh Megofna '23 qualified in four events at state. Rising junior Jayden Kopacz '25 qualified in three events. They finished the season ranked in the top 16 in the state in their events. Congratulations to the entire team for a fun season.

Tennis
Prep’s Tennis Team had a fantastic season, playing hard and showing great determination and spirit throughout the season. Tati Dalton-Spilca ’23 successfully defended her district singles champion title. She also was named to the 2023 Academic All-American Team.

Track & Field
The Varsity Boys Track & Field Team finished in fifth place in the New Mexico Athletics Association (NMAA) State meet, led by Aiden Vujevic ’23 and Sudais Ball ’23. Aiden placed second in the 800-meter run and third in the 400-meter run. Ball placed second in shot put. Other contributors were Ashadu Ball '25, (second in pole vault) and Ethan Meade '26 (fifth in the 100 meter). The Boys 800-meter relay (Ethan Meade '26, Leighton Dellabarca '24, Jadon Provoost '26, and Aiden Vujevic '23) finished third. The 1600 medley relay team (Ashadu Ball '25, Leighton Dellabarca '24, Jadon Provoost '26, and Aiden Vujevic '23) finished fourth.

The Girls Varsity Track & Field Team was led by Kate Henderson '25, State 3A 3200-meter champion, and Camila Chavez '25, 3A state runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles. Our girls team finished in third place overall. Kate '25 also finished in second place in the 1600- and 800-meter races. Isabel Fernandez '25 finished eighth in the 1600-meter race as well. Camilla '25 finished in fourth place for the 100-meter hurdles. Newcomer Zara Munyer '25 stepped up to finish fifth in the 3200-meter run. The Girls 1600-medley relay (Sklya Johnson '26, Mukai Dube '25, Camila Chavez '25, and  Isabel Fernandez '25) finished in third place. Congrats to the coaching staff, led by Kyle Ellis and Sid Scheer.

Volleyball
Varsity Volleyball finished in the top six in the 3A State Tournament.
